The latest power Two Wheelers (PTW) press statistics were “very encouraging” considering February is typically a low volume month, as buyers usually hold back to get the new 22 number plate in early March.
According to the latest MCIA figures, all categories of motorcycles experienced growth, Scooters led with the highest registrations at 1,752 units, a 113.1% increase year on year. The Honda PCX 125 achieved the highest registered scooter for February with 309 units, almost 20% of total registrations.
Similarly, all engine sizes (0-1000cc+) experienced an 81.7% total increase in registrations, ending February at 5,212 units compared to 2,868 for the same month in 2021. The highest performing category was the 51-125cc with 2,298 new registrations in February (83.3% growth).
Due to further economic and environmental concerns, the Electric Power Two Wheelers (ePTWs) continue to perform well. Year on year, February experienced a 79.6% increase, to 936 total units. By far the most popular power-band was 1 – 4 kw machines representing 88% of all EV motorcycles sold. The Vmoto SUPER SOCO CPX surged ahead in the 1-4kw category with 125 units sold, 117 units ahead of the Keeway E-ZI MINI in the second highest category (under 1kw).
Honda retains its position as the most popular manufactured PTW, at 1,340 new registrations for February. Yamaha follows with 372 units registered, with Lexomoto just behind at 369 registrations.
As the UK slowly eases out of COVID-19 restrictions, many commuters are still concerned about using public transport and have thus turned to economic congestion busting PTWs to get to work. Additionally, PTWs offer transport solutions for fast-food delivery businesses, as well as more conventional commuting and leisure riders.
The National Motorcycle Dealers Association (NMDA) expects current trends to continue throughout the coming months, especially the increased volumes of fully electric powered two wheelers.
Although supply issues continue to adversely affect the market, plus logistical concerns relating to the conflict in Ukraine, NMDA Members remain optimistic after another impressive month for registrations.
