Speaking at COP28 Transport Day (6 December) in Dubai, the Transport Secretary, Mark Harper, announced the launch of a £70 million pilot scheme to boost the number of ultra-rapid chargepoints at motorway services in the UK.

Harper also laid out plans for up to 10 trial sites in England with boosted electrical network capacity.

The announcement, which is part of the Government’s Rapid Charging Fund, will cover a portion of the costs of upgrading the electricity grid at successful motorway service areas. The announcement is hoped to aid the private sector in expanding the charging network.

The Government has also launched a consultation in response to this to discuss with various stakeholders on their views on how the Rapid Charging Fund should be designed. The consultation deadline is 14 February 2024.
