“It is positive to see the commercial vehicle market continued to grow 5.3% in January, following last month’s successful 14.7% rise”, said Sue Robinson, Director of the National Franchised Dealers Association which represents commercial vehicle and franchised car retailers across the UK, commenting on the SMMT’s van and truck registration figures.

New light commercial vehicle figures released today grew 5.3% in January to 19,939 units. Vans rose 12.9% on the back of robust business confidence, accelerating the 12 months to January by 13.2%. As expected, truck registrations stalled -37.0% following the move to the Euro-6 models.

Robinson continued, “Overall it was an encouraging result for the commercial vehicle market. Whilst van registrations grew 12.9%, heavy commercials were affected by the boom in registrations in December – which was the final month of Euro-5 truck registrations. It is expected that this low performance of truck sales will continue in the first quarter of 2014.

“It is difficult to predict what 2014 has in store for the truck market until the industry washes out of the December pre registrations and level out over the course of the year, however we are confident that van registrations will continue to grow”.
