Today, Thursday 21 December 2023, the European Council approved a three-year postponement of tariffs on electric vehicles

Sue Robinson, Chief Executive of the National Franchised Dealers Association (NFDA) which represents car and commercial retailers across the UK commented:

“NFDA welcomes the decision today by the European Union Council to delay tariffs for electric vehicles until the end of 2026.

“Had the delay not been introduced then potential costs of £3,600 (10% duty) would have been added on EVs moving between the UK and EU if less than 45% of their value came from either the UK or EU. This news will mean that electric vehicles will avoid an increase in costs.

“In NFDA’s recent Consumer Attitude Survey, price was the primary factor as to why respondents were not interested in purchasing an electric vehicle with 62%. This will be a positive development for consumers and we hope government matches this with attractive price incentives.”
