”It is extremely positive to see that commercial vehicle registrations reached an all-time high in 2015 – up 16.7% on 2014,” said Sue Robinson, Director of the National Franchised Dealers Association which represents commercial vehicle and franchised car retailers across the UK, commenting on the SMMT’s van and truck registration figures.

Figures released today show that demand in the van sector was up 15.7% - with 371,830 registrations, surpassing previous record set in 2007. In the truck sector, demand remained strong with figures up by a quarter to 52,064.

Robinson continued, “Growth was fuelled by the van sector, where demand, buoyed by the ongoing online shopping boom and attractive finance deals, hit record levels – up 15.6% to 371,830 registrations in 2015.

“Trucks also showed robust growth in a return to form for the sector, with registrations up 25.5% to 52,064 units, following a slower year in 2014 after regulatory upheaval resulted in a distortion of fleet renewal patterns.

“Demand looks set to remain strong as the confidence and growth in the economy continues. The NFDA are anticipating a successful year from the commercial vehicle market.”
